Darryl Clugston is a seasoned design-build executive with over 30 years of residential and commercial construction experience across North Carolina. Originally from New Britain, near Philadelphia, PA, and a proud graduate of the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades, he moved to North Carolina in 1996 with a rented room, $175 in his pocket and $1500 in the bank, a 1967 Ford pickup, and an unwavering drive to do and build something meaningful.

 

In 2004, he founded D. Clugston as a custom homebuilder in Apex, North Carolina. When the 2008 recession hit, Clugston shifted focus, strategically pivoting into commercial construction with an emphasis on amenity-driven developments. That decision, along with the steadfast support of his wife, laid the foundation for the firm’s evolution.

 

Clugston has built his company not just with talent, but with trust, surrounding himself with entrepreneurs, former employers, and long-standing industry partners. These relationships have played a key role in shaping the firm’s direction, contributing valuable insight, perspective, and shared values that continue to influence its growth.

 

Today, his multi-disciplinary team of 23 delivers high-impact projects across the Triangle, Triad, Charlotte, and coastal North Carolina, integrating civil engineering, aquatic and building design, and construction management. With a 95% repeat client rate, Clugston attributes the company’s continued success to his tight-knit team and a culture built on craftsmanship, transparency, and long-term relationships.

 

Outside of work, Clugston is an avid traveler and engaged member of his church. Whether mentoring young tradespeople or leading multi-million-dollar developments, he stays rooted in the same founding principle: Designing amenities. Creating communities.
